2024 BLC- relief activities [Final report]

SUNSHINE CHILDREN CENTER- relocating to a new land

The children center was directly affected by the fighting. As it is located next to the Northern Army Head quarter, when the fighting took place in the Waingmaw township, eastern side of Ayeyawaddy river, Burmese army started shooting large mortar (upto 1000 GP bomb) and missiles from their head quarter. These missiles flew right above the children center. Loud explosive sounds made children unable to sleep at night, fear of uncertainty. With this given situation, Piram (Center manager) consulted with me, David, and later decided to evacuate all the children to a safer location. However, moving the children and some of the staff was that easy. It has to be done in a way that the army personnel who are in control of the area, the village chief was also a Burmese army veteran, would not notice the activities. Piram would made one or two trips a day, hiding children’s belongings and other household items inside a small car. It was done this way for a week. After all the children, cooking utensils, some small household items and animals were move out, one last trip was made with a small light truck carrying bulky items such as tables, chairs and cabinets etc. Thank God they were able to come out passing the army post safely. The guards noticed but somehow didn’t ask any question. But we were told that from the next day onward, the guards strictly control in and out of the people and would not allow any large household items be taken out from that area. The main reason for disallowing people moving out from that area, or disallowing even to move out household items, was army wanted to show that things are normal, and everything is under controlled. In reality, things are quite opposite. But thank God, all children are now safe and moved into our family own property.

SUNSHINE CENTER- a new beginning

After several weeks of hard work and preparation, the children have now settled to a new location. Temporary bamboo-structure buildings were constructed with the help for local churches and friends. A road that leads to the current location was so bad, muddy all the time and difficult to travel in the rain, but thank God, the road is now repaired and children are safe travel on that road.

Another bigger challenge was moving all the children from one school to another school. With the current situation, Government schools drop out rate is probably highest in the history. In this kind of situation, school principal can be so stubborn to let any children from his/her school move out. However, after much negotiation the children are now admitted to nearby two government schools.

Is God leading the center to current location?

Looking back, when my late father started SUNSHINE CHILDREN CENTER, it started with fewer children. In fact, it was started on a renovated long bamboo structure, which was constructed and used as chicken poultry by my brother, Piram. After many years, Piram is now the center’s manager, and it has to move into a new land. But even this time, it was moved into a chicken poultry Piram has started about 10 years ago. It was abandoned for several years, but the situation demanded that they dismantled the structure, as it was falling anyway, and reused some of them building material to build these temporary structures for the centers. You may see in the pictures old zinc roof, wood, bamboos are reused for building. I reasoned with my brother Piram that God may be intentionally using the situation to move the children center to a new location! My brother expressed that he is now at peace at the new location.

I have asked my brother Piram to send me some updates about the center, and what the current eminent needs for the children. When he does, I will let you know that needs for the children so that you can continue to pray for SuNshine children center.

But for now, with the funds we received through DAI’s compassionate funds to Breakthrough Center Relief appeal, we were able to support Mr. Piram and children to safe moved into a new location. Please convey SUNSHINE children center’s heartfelt gratitude to individual donors, churches and all the supporters. May the Lord bless you all.

Construction second or third homes for families and BLC staff

Preparing for safety places; Fighting has intensified over the last few weeks for sure. The fighting has come to the door step of Myitkyina and locals are preparing for the worse. As others, we (BLC) are also started preparing for finding safe location locally and preparing with temporary building materials. We have identifies two potential locations where we will build tents if the war comes to our doorstep. We were able to gather some building material, such as bamboos, woods and other building materials.

We do have a large family property, where my mom and my older brother’s family are living. We are preparing that property as our second home (hideout place). The children center is now already moved to that location. We (David’s family) is also building a house there so that, if necessary, we can go and stay there. If not, we can always invite people who are needing a place to live. Though we say temporarily hideout place, we must have all the necessary things ready such as, like toilet, water well, kitchen etc. Therefore, it involves a lot of preparation and work.

Preparation of BLC staff

In response to current crisis, BLC staff and preparing in our best ability. With the donation we received we were able to purchase materials for emergency. We have identified a location, about 15 miles away from BLC, where we would build a temporary building to stay away from war. So far, we have shipped over 100 bamboos and purchased building material.

All the BLC staff are working together and formed the following emergency respond teams.

  1. Medical team
  2. Preparing and Construction temporary shelter team
  3. Medical supply team
  4. Emergency help team
  5. Power supply team
  6. Food supply team
  7. Coordinating local/international team

Relief Phase #1 [For the month of May]
Distributing food supplies to war victims and BLC staff

We have so far distributed food supplies (rice, cooking oil, flour, salt, potatoes,) to over 60 families in Myitkyina on 25th May.
These 60 families include BLC staff and war victims from Waingmaw township. We were also able to send funds to Putao for food distribution, but due no internet access we were unable to get a full report.

One of the TS- Bible translators expressed his gratitude as follows: “Thank you very much for your support. I am grateful for the assistance when I could no longer afford to buy anything. During these difficult times of rising prices, when there seemed to be no other hope, I am especially thankful for the unexpected provisions of rice, oil, food, and other supplies.”

One of the literacy workers for the ethnic minority groups in Myitkyina also says: “My heartfelt thanks go to the donors for helping us when we needed it. I believe that God will bless you even more so that you can continue to help those in need in the future.”

[we just started collecting testimonies from different individuals- and I will keep on adding newer testimonies here in this page.]

Relief work-phase #2 [For the month of JUNE].

For the Relief Phase #2, most of the food supplies distribution took placed in Putao, and also in Myitkyina. In June, the people of Putao suffer greatly due to road blockage between Myitkyina and Putao.
After the main road was blocked for extensive period of time, people in Putao suffered greatly. The price for a normal size of a rice bag went up from 80000K to 350000K, and also one liter of petrol was sold for 80000-90000K. It was a historic food price rise for Putao. Out Putao team- Mgt Yonathan, Yt Pongshar, Ah Khi and Zt Min did a wonderful job reaching out to the people who are desperately in need of food. Due internet cut off in Putao it was impossible for the team to send their reports and pictures. The situation got worsen after the internet blackout in JULY. Therefore, we were able to write up our relief report. How you can understand us.

But for the Phase #2 Relief work we were able to distribute food items to 170 families in Putao. We are thankful for the leadership of BLC’s friends and Local churches who helped us distribute food items to people who are in need.

Mgt Yonathan distributed food items to 79 families
Zt Min distributed food items to 42 families
Yt Pongshar distributed food items 24 families
Ah Khi distributed food items to 25 families [we have not heard from him until now]

Relief work-phase #3 [For the month of JULY].

Flood relief work; On the first week of July a large scale of flood swept many areas of Myitkyina. We were quick to respond to the needs on the ground. Praise the Lord for all the donation that made our relief not only quick but also effective. We coordinated with the local churches and provided bottled water, rice, flour, oil, medicines (6 items), spiritual first aids booklet, dinner boxes for 100 families for the whole week.

After the flood- we continued our regular relief work and preparation for the war and back up building material, fuel and medicine in case if the war broke out in Myitkyina.
We also provided food items to war refugees from Waimaw township who recently moved to Myitkyina. We were able to provide medicine and food items to [30] families, and dengue fever vaccination for 20 BLC families.

Thank you for your partnership with BLC. Myanmar is going through all sorts of difficulties. People are still struggling and trying everything to be survived. Your support is greatly appreciated. Because of your support we are able to complete this mission- well, for which we are so thankful for. Our family has now moved into Yangon and we are all safe and doing well.

We are so thankful for the opportunity to communicate with you through this webpage. Back home in Myitkyina, there is still no internet, and phone connects are only available in few places in town, still than the connection is very poor. I plan to go back to Myitkyina on 28th OCT and come back on the 5th NOV, to meet up with friends and to support and oversee all the ongoing activities at BLC.
Your partnership and financial support mean so much to us, we are forever grateful for your generous support. May God bless you all.

Your brother in Christ,
David Sangdong
