#2024- Myitkyina flood

There was a great flood in Myitkyina in 2004. More than half of the town was under the water. Exactly, after 20 years, Myitkyina seems to be facing similar situation.

I have never seen such scale of flood in Myitkyina. In 2004, I was in Yangon and didn’t experience the flood myself. But what I heard from the people was that the water covered all the downtown area. We may be seeing similar situation this year also.

As of today, 1st July 2024, it is raining all days, expected to have heavy rainfall for the next three days. Combining the flood waters (mainly from Ayeyawaddy river) with rain water will worsen the situation. Currently, Yekyi (where the Sunshine Children center is located), JetbawngChan, Myothitkyi, Rambu, Sidapru, Zilun, Shwenyawngpin and parts of Tatgone, Mankring and Shwezet were reported to be affected. All the phone lines have stopped working and the town is in chaotic situation with evacuation activities in all directions and places.

David’s two brothers went to the Myitkyina airport areas to evacuate some people, but they all are now stranded somewhere around airport. We were told that their car broke down and they are now waiting for the water to recede so that help can go in. Or waiting for the water level to rise so that rescue engine boats can go in and get them.

BLC and all the BLC staff are doing well. Nyewu and Kar Yaw live in Rambu and the area is now covered by water and we cannot go in. We are just hoping that they are OK and staying safe.
BLC will close down for this week, so that we can help support flood victims. We are preparing to provide food supplies for 200 families and also provide medicine, lunch boxes, for 150 individuals starting tomorrow, 2nd JULY, onward for 4 days.

Please continue to pray for us as we prepare to serve local communities this week.

Relief activity’s pictures (day 3)

During the day, we distributed food supplies, water and medicines to 100 families. This year we are focusing two communities, who are the most hit by the Floodwater; Kyetpawngchan village, and Yekyi village. We are closing collaborating with Rawang Baptist Church leadership in KetpawngChan village and Church of Christ leadership in Yekyi village.

We shipped most of the general use cleaning water for Yekyi village, total of 50 (15+35) containers.

We were also able to distribute food supplies of 50 families each for the two respective churches.

While distributing food items among Rawang Baptist Church, one of our BLC’s mother tongue Bible Translators ChangChang and her team helpout. For Church of Christ, the pastor of the village and BLC staff worked together.

BLC chef and her team prepared delicious meals for 100 families, 50 boxes for Rawang Baptist Church and 50 boxes for Yekyi.

We included a scripture verse to encourage our brothers and sisters who are going through difficult times. The scripture verse we used this time was- Psalms 46:1,
God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.

DAY-4, Relief activity [4th JULY 2024]

The whole town of Myitkyina is busy with cleaning activities. Fuel shortage is causing a lot of difficulties. I was told that it costs upto 15000K per liter. Normally it should be below 4000K.

Local Churches and Christians organizations are exhausted with relief work. I happen to talk one of the Chinese Businessmen; while purchasing bottled water, I was so encouraged by the scale of relief work they are doing through Kachin Baptist Convention, which is a largest Christian organization in the area. I thankful to the Lord, for all such generosity and support for the community.

Today (4thJuly) we received donations for the water, 100000K from SL from Dukathawng, and we also received 20 packages (containing 12 bottles per package) from MT25 construction company. With the donation we received and our relief funds we were able to purchase 70 packages (medium size) and together we distributed 90 packages of bottled water.

Though the flood visited just for 2 days and the cleaning will surely take place for 2-3 days, and areas where the floodwater level got over the first Foor of the houses, cleaning will surely takes 4-5 days. It also depends upon men power! BLC team relief team was able to help out cleaning SunShine Children Center. The floodwater reached up to 14 feet in that area, therefore there are massive amounts of cleaning. As of today (4th July), BLC staff, children from the center, and some youth from nearby houses came and helped out. We will continue the same cleaning activities for the next few days as well.

As we do cleaning activities at the Sunshine center, it also became our relief distribution hub for nearby families. Here are some pictures of people receiving bottled water. We also saw the church started distribution of food supplies BLC donated to Yekyi Church of Christ. I was able to take a couple of pictures of people coming home with those food supplies from the Church.
